Simformotion’s Simon Halabi, Customer Training & Support Manager, Talks Simulation with AsphaltPro

At CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2026, Simformotion’s Simon Halabi, Customer Training & Support Manager, shared how Cat® Simulators are transforming operator training in the construction industry during an interview with AsphaltPro. Halabi emphasized how the simulators—developed by Simformotion—replicate real machine controls and jobsite conditions, offering operators a safe, realistic environment to build skills and become job-ready.

Halabi emphasized the growing demand for training tools that help new operators practice skills, refine techniques and receive performance feedback without tying up production equipment. He noted that simulation is becoming a critical component of workforce development as companies look for efficient, scalable ways to train their operators.

Watch the AsphaltPro interview to learn more about how simulation training is helping operators build confidence and skills before they ever set foot in a real machine.

Inside Canada’s Push for Workforce Readiness

Canada is facing a growing demand for skilled heavy equipment operators, and organizations across the country are turning to Cat® Simulators for workforce training. Finning Canada is leading this shift by helping customers integrate Cat Simulators systems into their training programs, giving new and seasoned operators a safe, realistic environment to build confidence or improve skills before stepping into actual equipment. This approach aligns with an industry trend: today’s trainees are increasingly tech-savvy and eager for modern, hands-on learning tools.

Keyano College in Fort McMurray demonstrates how simulation can transform operator training. Its eight-week Heavy Equipment Operator program blends classroom lessons, SimScholars® curriculum, and extensive simulator practice across various machine types. Students build from basic knowledge to realistic virtual exercises before moving to a 40-acre outdoor training site, where they operate actual equipment. This integrated approach has already graduated over 60 students ready for careers in construction and mining.

The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 955 uses Cat Simulators to evaluate and train new operators for proper job assignments. Compact and portable SimLite systems have become valuable recruitment tools, offering newcomers a realistic first experience with equipment operation. As more Canadian organizations adopt simulation-based training, Cat Simulators—supported by Finning Canada—are becoming increasingly vital to workforce development, improving safety, reducing costs, and preparing the next generation of operators for success.
